I couldn't help but blog about this the moment i read yesterday's new paper. Special thanks to my grandma and my maid for pointing it out :)
The topic was on early puberty AND child pregnancy (this is the shocker). As the years go by, more and more girls are starting to have puberty earlier than the expected age (11-13). Kids are starting to have their periods from as early as age 4 and even younger. Did you know, the youngest mother in the world is aged 5 when she gave birth? I'm lazy to find out her origins, but its shocking enough to know that the youngest mother in Singapore is aged 9. Now she's 12, so her baby's about 3 years old.
Sadly, the mother had no choice but to put her child up for abortion. It's really scary when you think about how much trauma this child would have face. You would start thinking, what caused the pregnancy? The shocking thing was, the child consented to having sex with her boyfriend! Its freaky how kids are starting to get sexually active at such a young age. Imagine all the health complications that could occur if the child had contracted HIV or STDs, and even worse, plus a 'bonus', a baby.
Its not that the government is not conducting enough sex ed. courses in schools now a days. I feel that the adults in Singapore are still conservative, and feel that children are still too young to know about sex. All the more, kids will start getting curious, and land themselves into worse situations, like this 9 year old girl. They only start telling youngsters about sexual issues when they are teenagers.. but by telling them that at this age, one of the most 'life changing' and attitude changing period of their life..
is it a bit too late?
